Man Reports Fake Robbery to Try and Get Out of Speeding Ticket, DA Says

By Nicholas Rizzi | January 31, 2017 5:03pm

HUGUENOT — A man tried to get out a speeding ticket by calling in a bogus robbery nearby to reroute officers, prosecutors said.

Mohamad Mujalli, 23, was pulled over at Amboy Road and Rose Lane on Thursday after driving 40 miles-per-hour on a street with a 25 MPH speed limit at about 5:25 p.m., according to his criminal complaint.

While officers were giving him a ticket, Mujalli called 911 on his cellphone and reported a robbery in progress nearby at 862 Huguenot Ave. to get police to respond there instead, prosecutors said.

It's unclear if officers left or still gave Mujalli a ticket.

Officers found no robbery when they responded to the address and later traced the call to Mujalli's cellphone, prosecutors said.

Mujalli was arrested the next day and pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct at his arraignment, a spokesman for the Staten Island District Attorney's office said.

Contact information for his lawyer was not immediately available.
