CHINATOWN — A man who severely injured his wife by hacking at her head with a meat cleaver has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree assault.

Ming Guang Huang, 32, was arrested nearly four years ago for the assault, in which he dragged his wife down Canal Street as she screamed then slashed her repeatedly with a meat cleaver, leaving her with deep gashes over her head, neck, and body, officials said.

Huang pleaded guilty in December to the assault charge and on Wednesday was sentenced to 13 years in state prison, according to Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance.

“In a heinous act of spousal abuse, Ming Guang Huang hacked his wife within an inch of her life on a crowded city sidewalk,” said Vance in a statement.

“My office will not tolerate acts of domestic violence – whether they are committed in the home or on the street. I would like to thank the brave members of the FDNY who intervened and rescued this survivor, and my office’s prosecutors for bringing her abuser to justice."

Huang had been arguing with his wife on Feb. 24, 2013 when he dragged her onto the sidewalk from her place of work. Several nearby firefighters saw him dragging the victim along Canal Street as she cried and screamed, the firefighters had told DNAinfo New York.

Huang then began slashing at his wife with a meat cleaver, at which point two firefighters ran to intervene and held him back, according to the firefighters and the DA's office.

The victim was left with severe gashes across her body, including two that cut through her skull and into her brain, requiring intensive surgery and a lengthy hospitalization, according to the DA's office.
