Man Tries to Rape Woman in Ditmas Park Building on New Year's, NYPD Says

By James Fanelli | January 2, 2017 4:30pm

BROOKLYN — A man tried to rape a Ditmas Park woman late at night on New Year's Day after striking up a conversation with her outside her apartment and following her into the building's elevator, police said.

The suspect started talking to the 22-year-old victim as she was entering her apartment building at about 10:35 p.m. on Jan. 1, and then followed her into the building's elevator, where he threw her to the ground and tried to take off her pants, according to authorities.

The man fled when the victim started screaming and the elevator doors opened, police said.

NYPD has not made any arrests but released surveillance video of the suspect on Monday.

The video was taken by a camera outside the victim's building and shows the suspect, dressed in a blue hoodie, blue jeans and black work boots, speaking to the victim at about 10:35 p.m. on Sunday and then following her inside.

Police said paramedics treated the victim at the scene.

The suspect is described as approximately 20 years old, standing 5-foot-9 and weighing 160 pounds with short black hair, according to police.

The incident is being investigated by the NYPD's special victims squad in Brooklyn.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
