Gotta eat 'em all?
In the same year that Pokémon went from cards to virtual reality, dumplings jumped from your three-dimensional plate to 2D cards.
New York magazine is now selling $10 packs of 15 trading cards featuring those scrumptious little lumps of dough and filling served at New York City restaurants of all ethnicities.
The momos, tortellini and kreplach depicted on the cards — modeled after 1980s baseball cards — rank among the city's 50 best dumplings, according to an extremely thorough recent survey by New York magazine food editors Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld.
Why is there no better time than December 2016 to be a dough pocket connoisseur in the Big Apple? Patronite and Raisfeld point to three factors: the debut of a giant soup dumpling at the East Village's Drunken Dumplings; the impending publication of "The Dumpling Galaxy Cookbook," Flushing chef Helen You’s guide to making some of the best boiled Chinese dumplings; and an influx of exceptional Italian restaurants serving ravioli, gnocchi and the like.
New York magazine's dumpling cards are available for purchase online and such local shops at Court Street Grocers, Coming Soon, Project No. 8, Aha Front, Annie's Blue Ribbon General Store, Homecoming and the newly re-opened Pearl River Mart.
