MIDTOWN — Police released surveillance video and images of a suspect wanted for randomly stabbing a tourist in the head on Madison Avenue, the NYPD and sources said.

The 23-year-old victim, from Washington state, was walking with friends at the southeast corner of Madison Avenue and East 46th Street at 1:40 a.m. Sunday when he saw a man trailing them about 50 yards behind, police and sources said.

The suspect came toward the victim and stabbed him in the head with a small steak knife before fleeing westbound on East 46th Street, the NYPD said. He also scratched one of the tourist's friends in the face, sources said.

The victim, who had proposed to his girlfriend in Central Park just days before, headed east toward Vanderbilt Avenue before pulling the knife out himself, sources added.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital where he was treated and released, police said. He had returned to Washington by Monday afternoon, sources noted.

The suspect was described by police as standing 5-foot-10 and wearing a black skull cap, black sweatpants, black sneakers and a black hoodie with white stripes and the word "Jordan" on the sleeve.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Wednesday the suspect was walking with a stick in his hand and added that all officers in Midtown have his image on their phones.

"If you see him, call 911 immediately," he said. "We consider him a dangerous individual."

Anyone with information is asked to call 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
