THE BRONX — Police finally caught up with a man who murdered the mother of his child 23 years ago after she refused to flee the country with him, according to the NYPD.

Michael Stewart, 56, was wanted for narcotics when he shot then 22-year-old Sofia Blair in the head inside of 2323 Creston Ave. on Sept. 20 1993, a police spokesman said.

Stewart left their newborn child inside a crib in the apartment and then fled to Jamaica, according to police and New York Daily News report.

The case went cold and at some point Stewart reentered the country using a fake name and moved to Connecticut, where he was later imprisoned and incarcerated for identity theft, the spokesman added.

NYPD investigators eventually figured out who he was and interviewed him at the prison, where he made incriminating statements, police said.

Stewart was indicted by a grand jury on second-degree murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon charges and extradited back to The Bronx on Thursday.

Stewart was held without bail after being arraigned in Bronx Criminal Court.

There was no immediate information on his lawyer.
