HUNTS POINT — A 10-year-old boy has been left unconscious and hospitalized after getting hit by a vehicle in the South Bronx that may have been a school bus, police said.

The vehicle struck Waseem Al Najjar around 6:45 a.m. on Monday at the northwest corner of Hunts Point and Lafayette avenues as he was crossing the street to get to his uncle's deli, according to the NYPD and Hadi Al Najjar, the victim's uncle.

The driver then fled the scene, and Waseem was taken to Lincoln Hospital for treatment, police said.

He is still unconscious at the hospital, and the vehicle that hit him was dark — and police are investigating the possibility that it was a school bus — according to the NYPD.

The incident was first reported by NBC New York.

Hadi said the hit-and-run has left him "exhausted," but he was cautiously optimistic that his nephew would recover from it.

"Hopefully he’ll be alright," he said, "but he was injured badly."
