BROWNSVILLE — A 1-year-old boy died and six others were hurt when a fire tore through their 13th-floor apartment in Brownsville's Howard Houses, officials said.

The fire erupted inside the apartment at 260 Mother Gaston Boulevard, near East New York Avenue, about 8:35 a.m., FDNY and NYPD officials said.

"I saw a lady in a window with what looked like two kids. She didn't have a shirt on. She was naked. She looked like she was going to jump. Everyone kept yelling, 'Don't jump! Don't jump!'" said Quannie Mitchell, 26.

"After that, a firefighter wearing yellow ran out. He had the baby in his arms and was running as fast as he could down the block. The baby looked burned. He wasn't moving at all. They said he was unconscious. It broke my heart," Mitchell added.

The boy, Ivan Baez, was pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital, police said.

Six more were injured, including an 8-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl, but they were listed in stable condition at area hospitals, officials said. The other injured people were a 40-year-old woman, a 32-year-old man, a 22-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman, police said.

About 84 firefighters brought the fire under control at 9:21 a.m., FDNY officials said.

Fire marshals will determine what sparked the blaze, officials said.

The Red Cross dispatched relief teams to the fire scene as well, officials said.
