WILLIAMSBURG — A store worker attacked with a pipe a drunk man who came into the shop and mocked him, according to police.

A 49-year-old man, who told police he was intoxicated at the time of the attack, said he went into VM Fruit and Meat Market, a wholesale shop at 101 Varet St. at 2:10 p.m. on Friday.

He started making fun of a worker he knew there, but the employee came at him in retaliation with a piece of pipe and smashed him on the head with it, police said.

The impact left a gash on his head and the man was rushed to the Woodhull Hospital, according to police.

Martin Herrera, 54, a worker at VM Fruit who wasn't on duty the day of the attack but knows both the drunk victim and the worker, said the man been picking on the worker for several days leading up to the attack, at one point kicking avocados he was selling at a nearby corner.

"He's a good person but when he drinks he looks for problems," Herrera said, in Spanish. "He transforms completely."

No arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon and the investigation was ongoing, police confirmed.
