Ohio Legislature Passes Controversial ‘Heartbeat’ Abortion Bill

Ohio lawmakers passed a controversial “heartbeat bill” on Tuesday that would ban abortions as soon as a fetus’s heartbeat can be detected — usually occurs about six weeks after conception, when many women don’t even know they're pregnant yet. Ohio Republican leaders said that President-elect Donald Trump’s election spurred them to pass the bill, which would be the strictest time-based abortion law nationwide. Republican Gov. John Kasich has 10 days to decide whether to sign or veto the bill. [CNN]

Times in U.S. History That Electoral College Voters Did Their Own Thing

On Dec. 19, the electoral college will meet to cast their vote for the next President of the United States. Although most are expecting Trump to succeed, there are two Republican electors who are refusing to vote for him. Christopher Suprun, a paramedic and former firefighter, who said Trump is “someone who shows daily he is not qualified for office,” and Art Sisneros, from Texas, who said he would resign than cast a vote for Trump. Life Expectancy in the U.S. Falls for the First Time in More Than 20 Years

Americans’ life expectancy fell from 78.9 years in 2014 to 78.8 years in 2015, the first time it has dropped since 1993. The fall was attributed to increased fatalities from several health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, accidents and drug overdoses. However, experts said not to read too much into one year of data, noting that next year, the numbers could reverse. [Washington Post]

Ray Chavez, 104, the oldest known Pearl Harbor survivor, started hitting the gym in 2013 to prepare himself for a return to Hawaii on the 75th anniversary of the attack. “I can’t forget it. I never will,” he said of the 1941 tragedy. He often makes the trip to honor the fallen, but needed to get in shape to make the six-hour flight and put on 20 pounds of muscle. [NBC]
