Just as the days are getting short and the world dark, a bit of good news is here: On any weekday until March, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is free.

As of Dec. 1, the garden will not charge admission Tuesday through Friday until after Feb. 28. (The garden is closed Mondays.)

Though the practice isn’t new — garden staff say free weekdays during winter hours have been instated there for the past several years — it’s part of a slate of programs, classes and tours at the BBG designed to keep the winter blues at bay.

The “Light in Winter” programming includes winter bird watching walks, a migrating musical performance to coincide with the solstice and a terrarium-making class with UrbanGlass.

In particular, we’re excited for a chance to hang out for free in the garden’s tropical, desert and Mediterranean conservatories a.k.a. super-heated indoor gardens chock full of weird and awesome plants like this gorgeous, ruffly orchid that lives in the Aquatic House:

So, do like our friends over at Brokelyn suggest and play hooky at the garden for a day of free self-care. We won't tell!

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is located at 990 Washington Ave., 150 Eastern Parkway or 455 Flatbush Ave. and is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day except Mondays. Admission on Saturday and Sunday is $12 for adults.
