THE BRONX — A grand jury will investigate the fatal shooting of a mentally ill woman in The Bronx by a police sergeant, according to the Bronx District Attorney's Office.
Deborah Danner, 66, was fatally shot by NYPD Sergeant Hugh Barry on Oct. 18 at her home in Castle Hill after she allegedly picked up a bat and swung it as his head, officials said.
The office of Bronx DA Darcel Clark took over the investigation of the shooting after New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman determined that his office did not have jurisdiction over the case because Danner had a bat when she was shot.
Clark announced on Monday that she had requested a special grand jury to be impaneled to investigate the fatal shooting and determine whether any criminal charges are justified.
