STUYVESANT TOWN — A Stuyvesant Town cafe was forced to shutter after it failed a health inspection over the weekend, according the Department of Health.

Five Stuy Cafe, located on the western side of the oval, shut its doors on Saturday after inspectors found evidence of improper storage of hot and cold food, employees working without hair nets and with soiled clothing, and the use of food from “unapproved sources,” according to DOH records.

The cafe remained closed on Tuesday afternoon with several employees cleaning up, but the workers declined to comment. The cafe is run by an independent contractor, representatives of whom were not immediately available for comment.

In its most recent inspection in July, the cafe, which opened over the summer, got an A rating, according to the DOH.

In an email to residents Rick Hayduk, general manager of the complex said the infractions were “administrative in nature,” and said residents should not hesitate to eat there again if and when it reopens.

“StuyTown Property Services shares [the managers’] disappointment but remains confident in their ability to serve the residents of PCVST safe and delicious food,” he wrote.
