NEW YORK CITY — The NYPD sergeant wounded during a Bronx shooting that killed another sergeant has been released from the hospital, police said Saturday.

Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo was released from Jacobi Medical Center Friday night, just hours after being shot in the leg during a shootout with Manuel Rosales, 35, on Beach Avenue near Merrill Street in Van Nest, police said.

Kwo and Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo confronted the heavily armed Rosales outside of his wife's home just before 3 p.m., after pinning his Jeep against a curb. As the two officers approached the vehicle, Rosales, who was attempting to climb out of the Jeep's front passenger-side window, opened fire with a chrome Colt .45 caliber handgun, according to police.

Tuozzolo was struck in the forehead and killed, while Kwo, who was shot in the leg, moved around the back of the car for cover, and fired, wounding Rosales, police said.

Other officers arrived, shooting Rosales several more times, ultimately killing him, sources said.

Rosales was carrying multiple weapons at the time of the shootout, sources said.

Both Kwo and Tuozzolo were rushed to Jacobi, where Tuozzolo was declared dead. Kwo was treated for his injuries and released late Friday, police said.

Mayor Bill De Blasio ordered city agencies to fly all flags at half-staff starting at sunrise Saturday in honor of Tuozzolo.
