QUEENS — A 14-year-old student was arrested Wednesday after he brought a gravity knife to Forest Hills High School, sources told DNAinfo New York.

The teen was stopped by school safety officers at dismissal time, sources said, and officers recovered the knife.

The Department of Education said students and staff were safe and that the issue will be addressed.

Gravity knives have been illegal in New York since 1958.

Earlier this year, legislation passed the State Senate and Assembly that would de-criminalize the possession of most gravity knives. The bill is currently awaiting a signature or veto from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

According to published reports, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner James O'Neill have asked the governor to veto the bill which they said could increase the number of knife assaults.

Supporters of the initiative say the current law is outdated and that it affects people like construction workers who may get arrested for carrying a tool they need for work.
