Corrections Officer Beat and Choked 9-Year-Old Son, Police Say

By Paul DeBenedetto | October 22, 2016 1:28pm | Updated on October 24, 2016 2:56pm

THE BRONX — A New York City Department of Correction officer was arrested early Saturday after police said he choked and struck his 9-year-old son inside their Bronx home.

Mohammed Alam, 42, repeatedly slapped his son across the back and choked him, causing scratches, swelling and redness on the boy's body, according to police.

Alam was arrested at 5 a.m. Saturday, and was charged with strangulation, endangering the welfare of a child, assault and harassment, police said.

A DOC spokesman did not confirm whether Alam had been fired or suspended, but emphasized the professionalism of most of the department's employees.

"The vast majority of our officers carry out their duties with care and integrity and DOC is taking many steps to ensure that all staff adhere to the highest professionalism," spokesman Peter Thorne said.

DOC officials are investigating the incident, a spokeswoman said.
