De Blasio's Fraught History With Tardiness Includes Boats and Helicopters

Getting around the city has long been a fraught task for Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Just last week he needed a helicopter to get from Prospect Park to Long Island City to beat the Friday evening rush.

That was not the first time the mayor has generated headlines for his mode of transportation.

Right after he took office in February 2014, an NYPD detective was spotted speeding through red lights as she drove the mayor across the city. The incident occurred just days after he announced his Vision Zero plan to improve traffic safety. The detective was promoted two years later.

Who could forget when de Blasio was half an hour late to a memorial service for victims of Flight 587 in November 2014 because he said his boat got lost in the fog? Then it turned out he was 30 minutes late to the boat because he had a rough night and was feeling "sluggish."

Then there was the time, also in November 2014, when the mayor made an entire JetBlue flight to Puerto Rico wait for him before it could take off.

And there was the time mayor was caught being chauffeured to Park Slope so that he could hop on the subway with Sen. Chuck Schumer to attend a press conference on federal spending for transportation infrastructure in April 2015.

Instead of running to a standoff in Staten Island where a firefighter was shot in August 2015, de Blasio ran to a midday workout at the Park Slope YMCA.
