Drunk Driver Sped Wrong Way Down Highway, Prosecutors Say

By Nicholas Rizzi | October 18, 2016 1:05pm

ANNADALE — A drunk driver sped the wrong way on a Staten Island highway, forcing cars to swerve to avoid hitting him, prosecutors said.

Carlos Martinez, 29, of Woodside, Queens, was driving a Black Cadillac CTS at 2:15 a.m. on Oct. 15 when officers spotted him speeding into oncoming traffic on the Korean War Veterans Parkway, near the Arden Avenue exit, prosecutors said.

He later crossed the median on the wrong side of the road.

Officers pulled Martinez over and noticed a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot eyes and blurred and incoherent speech, according to the criminal complaint.

Martinez was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and driving while ability impaired at his arraignment, the Staten Island District Attorney's office said.

He was released without bail and is due back in court on Dec. 14, according to online court records.

His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
