Man Dies After Friend Accidentally Shoots Him in the Head, Authorities Say

By Nicholas Rizzi | October 17, 2016 11:42am

NEW DORP — The man accidentally shot in the head by a friend as they played with guns has died from his injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Stephino Ross, 23, died Wednesday at Staten Island University Hospital North.

He was shot more than a week earlier by Thomas Dembinski, 18, inside a Cannon Boulevard home, near New Dorp Plaza, the spokeswoman and police said.

Ross was showing Dembinski different guns inside the home on Oct. 2, prosecutors said.

"He showed me a 9mm Glock and a baby Glock," Dembinski told police, according to court documents.

"Then he showed me a little pocket pistol, almost like a mini Beretta kind of thing."

Dembinski told police he took the magazine out of the pistol, cocked the slide and thought the round ejected, but when he later pulled the trigger the gun fired and hit Ross in the side of the head, prosecutors said.

Dembinski was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of a weapon and assault, prosecutors said.
