Here's How To Navigate the Holiday Travel Rush

Thanksgiving might be the biggest travel crush of the year, but the December holidays bring their own crush of travelers.

New Yorkers will join the more than 103 million Americans who are expected to travel from Friday, Dec. 23 to Monday, Jan. 2, according to AAA. That's 1.5 million more people — or a 1.5 percent increase — over the same time in 2015.

If you're flying for Christmas or Hanukkah, you should allow extra travel time. The industry trade organization Airlines for America said it expected 45.2 million passengers to fly on U.S. airlines between Dec. 16 and Jan. 5, and predicted JFK International Airport would be one of the busiest travel hubs in the country.

For those staying closer to home, the MTA will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Friday, Dec. 23 with additional Metro-North trains out of Grand Central Terminal and Long Island Rail Road trains out of Penn Station. 

Subways, buses and the Staten Island Railway will operate on a Saturday schedule on Dec. 24. The LIRR and Metro-North's East of Hudson service will also operate on a Saturday schedule, and Metro-North's West of Hudson trains will operate on a regular weekend schedule.

On Christmas Day, subways and the Staten Island Railway will run on a Sunday schedule, and buses will operate on a holiday schedule. The LIRR will operate with a regular weekend/holiday schedule and will add additional trains. Metro-North's East of Hudson service will operate on a regular Sunday schedule, and West of Hudson trains will operate on a regular weekend schedule.

Subways, buses and the Staten Island Railway will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, Dec. 26. Metro-North's East of Hudson service will operate on a Saturday schedule with additional trains on the Hudson and New Haven lines. The West of Hudson lines will operate on a weekend schedule.
