Gowanus Whole Foods Clerk Arrested After Stealing $1,300, Police Say

GOWANUS — A Whole Foods grocery cashier was arrested after stealing from her register 11 times in a one month period, according to a police report.

The 21-year-old clerk told police she swiped the cash — $1,381 in all — to pay off overdue rent, according to the report. The thefts happened between Aug. 25 and Sept. 25 and the clerk was arrested Sept. 29, according to the report.

Other recent crimes in the 78th Precinct include the following, with details coming from police reports:

► A 31-year-old woman was arrested after shoplifting $25 in baby items and household goods from Target at Atlantic Terminal mall on Sept. 26 at 8:30 pm.

► A stranger threatened a 43-year-old woman while she was walking her dog in Prospect Park at 4:15 pm on Sept. 27 near the intersection of West Drive and Center Drive. The stranger yelled, "Put your dog on a leash or we're gonna kill you and your dog."

► A 32-year-old woman had her Samsung Galaxy S6 phone stolen after she left it on the counter at a concession stand inside the Barclays Center on Sept. 25 at 9:30 p.m.

► A 31-year-old woman was arrested Sept. 28 after swiping $868 in groceries, clothes, luggage and cosmetics from the Target at Atlantic Terminal Mall.

► A resident of the Park Slope Women's Shelter on Eighth Avenue and 14th Street had 40 MetroCards stolen from her locker.

► A 2006 gold Honda Accord sedan was stolen from First Street between Eighth Avenue and Prospect Park West sometime between Sept. 27 and Sept. 29.

► A Harley-Davidson motorcycle was stolen from near the Grand Army Plaza entrance of Prospect Park on Sept. 25 at about 9 p.m.

Overall, major crime in the 78th Precinct has dropped 11 percent this year compared to the same period in 2015, according to the most recent statistics from the NYPD. There were 635 major crimes reported between Jan. 1 and Sept. 25, 2016, and 711 major crimes during that period in 2015.
