MIDTOWN — A thief stole more than $1.16 million worth of gold flakes from an armored truck making pickups for a company that transports valuables, the NYPD said.

Two armed guards hired by Loomis International told police they had just finished picking up goods on West 47th Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues, around 4:35 p.m. on Sept. 29 when they went to a location on West 48th Street between the same avenues to make another pickup.

Loomis International provides international transportation for valuables, among other services, according to its website.

When the guards arrived at the location, they discovered someone had removed a 5-gallon drum filled with 86 pounds of gold flakes from the back of the armored truck they’d been driving, police said.

The gold flakes — which the guards were supposed to be transporting to Asahi Refining in Ontario, Canada — were valued at approximately $1,166,000, the NYPD said.

Police are now searching for a male suspect who was carrying a black messenger bag and wearing a black vest, a green shirt and blue jeans at the time of the theft.

Loomis International and Asahi Refining did not respond to requests for comment.
