EAST NEW YORK — Several residents of East New York’s Cypress Hills houses called for improved policing and housing conditions following a fatal daytime shooting in the complex Tuesday.

Tyrone Stewart, 31, was standing in the vestibule of 1200 Sutter Ave. when he was shot multiple times, according to the NYPD. Stewart, who lived in the houses at 1230 Sutter Ave., was rushed to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A 44-year-old woman who lives on the first floor of 1200 Sutter said her two teenage children were “traumatized” after the shooting.

“I’ve got to send my kids out every summer,” said the woman, who declined to give her name for fear of retaliation. “They can’t stay here.”

Several other residents said they have been asking for better lighting at night and a 24-hour police presence to cut down on gang violence.

Fourteen crew members operating out of the houses were arrested in June and charged with drug trafficking and narcotics possession, according to federal law enforcement.

Residents, though, said there is still rampant gang violence.

“It’s very bad,” the mother said. “There’s crime everywhere.”

There were no immediate arrests after the shooting, according to police, and the investigation is ongoing.
