Russian Hackers Leak Confidential Medical Records of Dozens of Athletes

After Russian hackers gained access to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s management system and released records for American athletes Simone Biles, Serena Williams and Venus Williams, a second round of leaks has made public the medical data for 25 athletes from around the world, including 10 from the U.S. and two Tour de France champions. A Look Inside the New African-American Museum

Excitement is building for the grand opening of the new National Museum of African American History and Culture on Sept. 24 in Washington. Designed by Tanzanian-born architect David Adjaye, the $540 million museum will have more than 37,000 pieces on display. Highlights from the collections include a segregation-era southern railway car, a Depression-era Angola Prison watchtower and a dress Rosa Parks was making shortly before her 1955 arrest. Police Department Fires Officer Who Didn’t Shoot Man Holding Unloaded Gun

During a domestic dispute in West Virginia, former police officer Stephen Mader decided not to shoot a suspect holding a gun, but rather talk to him. When other officers arrived on the scene, they shot and killed the man. Mader said the man, who had the gun hanging at his side and pointed at the floor, told the officer to shoot him. “I thought I was going to be able to talk to him and deescalate it. I knew it was a suicide-by-cop,” he said. It was later found that the gun was unloaded. Mader was fired in June because he “failed to eliminate a threat.” [Pittsburgh Post-Gazette]

Family of Sandra Bland Reaches $1.9 Million Settlement with Texas

The family of Sandra Bland, the 28-year-old woman who died in jail after a heated exchange with a Texas State Trooper, has settled a wrongful death lawsuit with authorities for $1.9 million. The jail will also have an on-duty nurse and emergency medical technician on staff for all shifts as part of the settlement. [CBS]

The rapper Jay Z, who has been candid about his past as a drug dealer, talks about the history of drugs in urban communities, how it’s often talked about as a “black problem,” and how the war on drugs by the Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan presidencies was an “epic fail.” [New York Times]

President Obama Plans to Increase Number of Refugees Admitted to the U.S.

Amid of a years-long refugee crisis, the Obama administration announced that the U.S. will up the number of refugees allowed in to the country in 2017 by 30 percent, from 85,000 to 100,000.
