No one's prices have been quite as "insaaaaaaane."
Eddie Antar, co-founder of the Crazy Eddie electronic retail chain, died Saturday at age 68.
New Yorkers know the company — which imploded when authorities revealed its inflated inventory and sales figures — best for its distinctive 1970s and 1990s commercials starring a fast-talking pitchman many viewers mistakenly identified as Antar himself.
"Crazy Eddie" was in fact played by Jerry Carroll, a radio DJ for WPIX-FM. Carroll ended all of the 7,500 radio and television ads he did with the same plug for the stores' "insaaaaaaaane" prices.
Here's a look at a few of our favorites:
Crazy Eddie plays Santa Claus
Carroll smooches some mistletoe and dodges some (but not all) snowballs in this Christmas-themed commercial.
Crazy Eddie wears some crazy headgear
Props in this commercial for a CD and cassette blow-out sale include a Dr. Seuss cat hat, an afro wig and a lasso. It would be offensive — if it weren't downright absurd.
Crazy Eddie shows off his domestic side
The weirdest part of this commercial for a home appliance sale is the fake arm Carroll uses to iron a T-shirt. Or maybe it's the microwave overflowing with sausages.
Crazy Eddie drafts some reindeer helpers
We love the "Christmas in August" concept (as far as we're concerned, it should be Christmas all year round). But why in the world would you dress up your reindeer in pig snouts?
Crazy Eddie gets ready for the new school year
According to this ad, "Eddie" is an A+ student. And his prices aren't just "insaaaaane"; they're "educationally insane."
Crazy Eddie changes the course of home entertainment with his superpowers
"Disguised as this annoying television announcer," says the voiceover in this commercial, Crazy Eddie "fights a never ending battle for service, selection, and prices that are..."
Well, you know by this point.
