CRIME BLOTTER: Would-Be Bank Robber Slips Teller Note Demanding $20K

By Nikhita Venugopal | September 12, 2016 1:59pm

RED HOOK — A would-be robber slipped a note demanding $20,000 to a teller at Santander Bank in Red Hook — and was arrested after he was rebuffed twice by the bank employee, police said.

The 33-year-old man walked into the branch at 498 Columbia St. near Lorraine Street on Aug. 17 at about 12:15 p.m. and passed the note to a female bank teller, authorities said.

When the teller refused to comply, he verbally lowered his request to $10,000 in cash, but she rejected his demand again, according to police and the Brooklyn District Attorney's office.

The man fled the bank through the emergency exit without any cash, but officers arrested him after a canvas of the area, police said.

He was charged with attempted grand larceny, attempted criminal possession of stolen property and attempted petit larceny.

Other notable crimes in the 76th Precinct, according to police, include:

► A $250 Schwinn bicycle and bike seat also worth $250 were stolen from the staircase of a building on Clinton Street on Aug. 21 between 7:30 and 11:40 p.m. It was not clear whether the bicycle had been locked.

► A 45-year-old woman was attacked with a metal rod at her home by a man whom she said she knew. The victim heard a noise outside her Clinton Street door in Red Hook on Sept. 3 at about 12:54 p.m. When she opened the door, the 34-year-old man began hitting her body, arms and legs with the rod. She suffered bruising and abrasions on her body. The man was arrested for assault, criminal mischief and menacing.
