'You Don't Belong Here,' Anti-Muslim Attacker Screamed at Women: DA

By Aidan Gardiner | September 12, 2016 12:12pm

BROOKLYN — A woman beat two moms pushing strollers through Bath Beach and tried to pull off their hijabs while shouting "Get the f--k out of America, b---hes! You don't belong here!" prosecutors said.

"This is the United States of America. You're not supposed to be different from us!" Emirjeta Xhelili bellowed while assaulting the moms, ages 23 and 24, near 20th and Cropsey avenues about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, police and prosecutors said.

She punched and kicked the faces and bodies of the two women who were with their babies, both of whom were about 1 year old, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney.

Xhelili, who's originally from Albania, was arrested about 45 minutes later near 19th Avenue and Benson Avenue, according to police and jail records.

She faces charges of assault as a hate crime, menacing, endangering the welfare of a child and harassment, prosecutors said.

"We urge the Brooklyn District Attorney's office to prosecute this horrific attack vigorously, sending the message that hate attacks targeting any minority group will not be tolerated, said Afaf Nasher, director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Xhelili has been held on $50,000 bail and due back in court on Wednesday, jail records show.
