NEW YORK CITY — Better call the nanny.
Students returning to school this week will be coming home soon and often — as three out of the first five weeks on the schedule include at least one day off, according to the 2016-2017 public school calendar.
The first school week, a mere two days that begin on Thursday, will be followed by a three-day weekend as all schools close Monday, Sept. 12 for Eid al-Adha, a Muslim holiday added to the public school schedule in 2015 by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
The three-day weekend is not the longest vacation students will see within the first month of school. Classes are canceled on Monday, Oct. 3, and Tuesday, Oct. 4, for the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah.
The following week, schools are closed Mon., Oct. 12, for Columbus Day and Wednesday, Oct. 14, for Yom Kippur
However, there will be a one-month respite after Yom Kippur. Students will be in classes every weekday after that until Veteran’s Day in mid-November.
