"It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a .... squirrel?"

A lesser-known, part-rodent Marvel heroine could soon be Joining New York City crime fighters Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage on the small screen.

Marvel Entertainment and ABC Studios are developing a half-hour comedy series that would feature squirrel-whispering superhero Squirrel Girl, a member of the New Warriors squad, sources told TVLine

In the Marvel comic book universe, Los Angeles-born Squirrel Girl, a.k.a. Doreen Green, moves to New York City to fight crime, get an undergraduate degree in computer science and babysit Jessica Jones and Luke Cage's daughter.

Beyond her empathic bonds with bushy-tailed rodents, Green counts superhuman strength, speed, agility and fast reflexes among her powers. Her mutant attributes include a tail, claws, and larger-than-human incisors.

Squirrel Girl made the news in June when actress Anna Kendrick told Net-a-Porter her brother thought she should play the heroine.

"I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!” she said.

Fans who expressed elation over the idea could get their wish.

The New Warriors project is reportedly "being shopped around to cable and streaming outlets."

If the show gets green-lighted, there's a significant possibility it would be filmed in New York City, as is the case for four web TV series featuring the Marvel heroes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage.

Our most pressing question: will Pizza Squirrel be Squirrel Girl's sidekick?
