UNION SQUARE — Police arrested a convicted killer from The Bronx for attempted murder more than a day after he pummeled a woman and shot her in the leg in a botched robbery near Union Square, according to a police spokeswoman.

Leslie Jimenez, 60, of West Farms, was arrested on Sunday night in connection to the brutal robbery and shooting of a 55-year-old woman in the lobby of 126 Fifth Ave. near 17th Street at about 12:20 a.m. on Saturday, according to authorities.

The victim, who according to the Daily News is a cleaning supervisor at the mixed commercial and residential building, was walking into the building just after midnight with cash on hand to pay employees, when Jimenez slipped in the door behind her, flashed a gun, and ordered her to the floor, police said.

The woman fought back, and the two began fighting over her purse, with Jimenez repeatedly striking the victim, according to a police spokeswoman. As they fought, a colleague of the victim, a 52-year-old man, ran to the building’s fourth floor and called 911, police said.

Back in the lobby, after struggling over the purse, Jimenez shot the woman twice in the leg and fled with about $2,000 in cash, police said. EMS took the woman to Bellevue Hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said.

Officers caught up with Jimenez nearly 48 hours later, arresting him at 8:35 p.m. on Sunday evening on charges of attempted murder, robbery and assault, according to a police spokeswoman.

Jimenez has a criminal record going back decades, including a 1977 robbery conviction and a 1983 conviction for first-degree manslaughter, which kept him locked up until his release in 1997, according to Department of Correction and Community Supervision records.

He served another two years from 2005 to 2007 for drug dealing, but had managed to stay out of prison since 2007, DOCCS records show.

It was not immediately clear on Monday morning when Jimenez is due in court and information regarding a lawyer was not available.

The owner of the building did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
