This is the third time Weiner, a one-time New York City congressman and mayoral candidate, has been caught sending graphic and lewd texts and photographs to women over Twitter.
Weiner has most recently been sending messages to an unidentified woman since 2015 while Abedin traveled with the Clinton campaign, the New York Post reported on Monday. One of the lewd photos also apparently featured Abedin and Weiner's son, who's a toddler.
“After long and painful consideration and work on my marriage, I have made the decision to separate from my husband," Abedin, a close aide to Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, said in a statement, according to the Times.
"Anthony and I remain devoted to doing what is best for our son, who is the light of our life.”
Weiner resigned as congressman in 2011 after he accidentally tweeted lewd pictures of himself publicly and admitted he had sent sexually explicit photographs to several woman.
He was again caught sending lewd tweets to another woman under the name “Carlos Danger” during his 2013 campaign for New York City mayor.
At the time, Abedin told reporters that, despite his “horrible mistakes,” she had decided to forgive him and remain in the marriage.
Weiner sent the new messages to a woman the Post described as a divorcee in her 40s who is a Donald Trump supporter.
Local television station NY1 announced on Monday that it will also separate from Weiner — a regular contributor to its "Wise Guys" segment — whom they have placed on "indefinite leave."
