FLATBUSH — A 16-year-old has been arrested in the murder of a 36-year-old father shot dead outside a neighborhood school while standing up to his son’s muggers.

Officials said Gerald Cummings was shot in the head and back on Aug. 3 outside P.S. 6 on Snyder Avenue while trying to confront a group of men who had earlier taken an iPhone and hat from Cummings’ 17-year-old son, the NYPD and witnesses said.

Cummings was declared dead at Kings County Hospital shortly after the shooting, officials said.

On Aug. 18, police arrested 16-year-old Adonis Barnett in the shooting. He was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon and held without bail, court documents show. His attorney Christopher Hoyt could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Cummings was described by his widow, Migdalia Cummings, as a “loving father and devoted friend.”

“He was a good friend. He gave his all to anybody," she told DNAinfo at the couple’s home after the shooting.

News of the arrest was first reported by the Daily News.
