CROWN HEIGHTS — Calling all rook-ies!

The third annual Brooklyn Chess Festival will take place this weekend, bringing chess masters, learn-to-play workshops and pick-up games to Crown Heights for an all-day chess extravaganza.

The event starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Dr. Ronald McNair Park on Eastern Parkway and Classon Avenue, organizers from the Parks Department said. The festival will include a chess tournament for kids in first through eighth grades and clinics for chess learners of all levels, the group said.

And for those who want to take on chess masters, they'll have three opportunities. The festival will include games with local chess masters Andrey Krasnov and Azeez Alade and a live stream game with Brooklyn-raised National Grandmaster Alex Lenderman.

The festival is sponsored by the Parks Department, the Brooklyn-based shop New York Chess & Games and FilmBarnBK, an independent film company from Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The event is free and open to the public, but those interested in the grade school chess tournament should pre-register online. And don’t worry about boards or pieces — all equipment will be provided at the park.

The Brooklyn Chess Festival will take place on August 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dr. Ronald McNair Park on Eastern Parkway and Classon Avenue. For more information, visit the Parks Department event page.
