Here's Where To Look If You Want a High-Paying NYC Job in a Creative Field

Jobs in creative industries aren't known for having the highest salaries, but there are some ways to pay your rent and stay in an artistic field.

Pay in the creative sector made significant strides between 2003 and 2013, according to a study from the Center for an Urban Future that was first reported by PayScale

From film school to fashion institute, if you're graduating with a creative degree you might want to give these positions a look: 

Art Director — Median Salary: $91,000

An art director is usually responsible for images and style in a wide range of industries from journalism to television, and even product packaging. They also work with others on artistic production so projects come together seamlessly. 

Advertising and Promotions Manager — Median Salary: $89,000

Promotions managers work on planning, directing and coordinating advertising policies. They also work on producing "collateral material" which are items and deals that help advertise another object or event. This includes giveaways, coupons and even posters. 

Producers and Directors — Median Salary: $70,000

Producers and directors are the creative leaders of television or film production, casting and selecting actors and other important crew members. Directors also make creative decisions about how actors should do their job while on set. Meanwhile producers put money together for the project. They also have a hand in post-production, development and even marketing. 

► Fabric and Apparel Patternmakers — Median Salary: $69,000

A patternmaker comes up with the idea behind how those pieces of clothing together. This includes T-shirts that will be sold for mass production at a chain store, or unique designs for custom-made clothing. Their job involves sketching out ideas by hand and seeing if they can be translated into actual clothes.

Multimedia Artists and Animators — Median Salary: $61,000

Visual mediums like movies, video games and television often need special effects and graphics. Multimedia artists and animators make a range of two-dimensional and three-dimensional characters, and other special effects for all sorts of media projects. Many of them use hand illustrations or editing programs to bring their creations to life.
