GREENWICH VILLAGE — Police are looking for the man in this surveillance video in connection with the attempted rape of a 20-year-old New York University student last weekend.

Police said the young woman was walking near 10th Street and Fifth Avenue about 4 a.m. on July 30 when the man came up behind her and put her in a bear hug.

He sexually assaulted her but she fought him off before he could rape her, police said.

As DNAinfo New York previously reported, the student told campus security about the attack when she got back to her dorm. They then contacted the NYPD, according to NYU administrators.

Police said the young woman initially refused medical attention but was later brought to a hospital for observation.

The man is believed to be between 25 and 35 years old, police said, with medium-length dark hair, weighing between 140 and 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing jeans, a short sleeve shirt, a dark baseball cap and a backpack, police said.

Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or by texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577. All calls are strictly confidential.
