Man High on Heroin Crashes Car Into Telephone Pole, Prosecutors Say

By Nicholas Rizzi | August 5, 2016 3:00pm

GREAT KILLS — A man high on heroin crashed his girlfriend's car into a telephone pole earlier this week, prosecutors said.

Michael Marquez, 23, was behind the wheel of his girlfriend's 2015 Honda Civic on Monday when he crashed it into a pole at the corner of Cleveland Avenue and Hylan Boulevard at about 9:10 a.m., prosecutors said.

"I can't believe I wrecked my girlfriend's car," Marquez told emergency workers, according to court papers.

Marquez admitted to officers that he "had a few drinks" and emergency officials saw that he was impaired by heroin, prosecutors said.

They found a glassine envelope and a $20 bill inside the car with heroin residue on it and had to give him the anti-overdose medication naloxone, a law enforcement source said.

Marquez was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving while intoxicated, driving while ability impaired and criminal possession of a controlled substance at his Tuesday arraignment, according to the Staten Island District Attorney's office.

He was released without bail and is due back in court on Oct. 19, according to online court records.

His lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
