MOUNT HOPE — A man and a woman were fatally shot in The Bronx Monday morning, police said.

Beramy Garcia, 33, and Yajahira Duverge, 37, who knew each other, were near East 175th Street and Weeks Avenue when the gunfire rang out about 5:14 a.m., an NYPD spokesman said.

"I heard five shots, no pause, just one after another. A lot of people were out in the street, then I heard screaming," said Sam Williams, 66, who lives on the block.

Garcia, a father of two boys from Morris Heights, was hit in the head, back and wrist and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Duverge, who lived in Wakefield, was hit in the torso and pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital, police said.

The pair's relatives were left reeling after the deadly shooting.

"She was beautiful. Words can't even explain, but we're holding up," said a woman who claimed to be the victim's sister-in-law, but wouldn't give her name.

Garcia's father said he did maintenance work in his Morris Heights apartment building to support his own two boys, 9 and 10.

"He was a good boy. He worked hard for his two sons," said Delfin Garcia, 65.

"My son is gone. I can't do anything about it. We need to find justice," the grieving grandfather added.

Investigators were questioning Duverge's husband, but he was not immediately considered a suspect, police said.

Investigators remained confident even though they hadn't made any arrests as of Monday afternoon, police said.

"We think it's going very well," said NYPD's Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce.

It wasn't clear what sparked the shooting, but it may have been tied to a block party in the area, an NYPD spokesman said.

NYPD officials said Garcia and Duverge didn't have a romantic relationship.

Garcia's relatives said Duverge frequently visited him at his Morris Heights apartment build.

Police found the gun used in the homicide atop a nearby car's tire, officials said.
