Man Wounded in Police Shooting Indicted on Drug and Weapons Charges: DA

BROOKLYN — A man shot by police after he fired a gun and waved it at passing cars in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens was indicted on gun and drug possession charges on Tuesday, according to court records.

Paul Mathurin, 31, pleaded not guilty to charges of reckless endangerment, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance in Brooklyn Supreme Criminal Court on July 19, according a the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office spokesman.

Mathurin was shot in the hip by police officers on the corner of Rogers and Lefferts avenues after witnesses saw him firing a gun into the air and police witnessed him threatening passing cars with a Taurus 9 mm handgun on July 10.

The Lefferts Avenue resident was arrested at the scene and was taken to to Kings County Hospital, police and prosecutors said. The incident happened on the same day that officers shot and killed an armed burglar in Gravesend, Brooklyn.

His pistol was recovered at the scene along with more than 500 milliliters of cocaine, according to court records.

Mathurin’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 13, according to court records. His bail was set at $500,000, prosecutors said.
