Red Hook Man Shot and Killed in Front of Apartment Building, Police Say

RED HOOK — A Red Hook man shot multiple times in front of his apartment building in the neighborhood died after succumbing to his injuries on Wednesday, police said.

Jahiem Smallwood, 23, was found with several gunshot wounds to his body at about 8:17 p.m. Tuesday night in front of a New York City Housing Authority building at 75 Bush St., police said.

Smallwood was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he died on Wednesday, July 20, authorities said.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

The fatal shooting comes just days after the 76th precinct touted "historic lows" in major crime this year, which includes murder, assault, robbery and burglary.

Before Smallwood's death, the precinct's last shooting involving a victim was on May 30, Deputy Inspector Elliot Colon told DNAinfo this week.

Shooting incidents, both ones that involve victims and ones that don't, are down for the year, according to Colon and NYPD crime stats. Between January and mid-July this year, the precinct had seven shooting victims as compared to nine during the same period in 2015.
