MANHATTAN — A Staten Island man was arrested for fatally running over a woman in Midtown East last week, according to police.

Mieczyslaw Truskowski, 63, of Clifton, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian, after he fatally struck 78-year-old Teresa Martinelli at the corner of East 58th Street and Second Avenue on July 1, police said.

Police responding to a 911 call just after 11 a.m. found Martinelli lying on the pavement with trauma to her body. EMS transported her to New York Presbyterian Hospital, but she later died of her injuries, according to authorities.

Witnesses of the collision told DNAinfo New York they saw Martinelli trapped under the wheels of the white Toyota Tundra, and said she was bleeding and was having trouble breathing.

Investigators determined that Truskowski failed to yield to Martinelli, who had the right-of-way, making a left turn and striking her while she was in the 58th Street crosswalk.

Information regarding his attorney or next court date was not immediately available.
