New Jackson Heights Art Group Wants to Connect Community

By Katie Honan | July 12, 2016 3:11pm

JACKSON HEIGHTS — A new group is hoping to connect the community's artists with an upcoming visioning session.

Jackson Heights Creates is the brainchild of six locals who want to connect the neighborhood's many different organizations by hosting talks, assisting with grant writing and more.

They're hosting a meeting and potluck on Saturday, July 23 at the library and garden of Community United Methodist Church to brainstorm with neighbors as they launch their project.

"Jackson Heights has an incredible community of creative people who are so talented, in all kids of artistic work," said Julie Nymann, an organizer of Jackson Heights Creates and owner of Espresso 77.

There are many groups — like the Hibridos Collective and the Jackson Heights Orchestra — that support local art, she said.

Jackson Heights Creates wants to be more of an umbrella group to connect everyone, similar to other groups in the borough.

"We looked to Sunnyside Artists, we looked to the Rockaway Artists Alliance," she said.

At the upcoming meeting, they'll ask questions on what the organization can ultimately accomplish and how they can provide support.

It's an informal meeting, where artists, writers, musicians, dancers and admirers of it all can bring along their ideas.

Nymann said they want to just provide more help to the community.

"We're not here to replace anything, just to be another support," she said.

The visioning session runs from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. For questions, email JacksonHeightsCreates@gmail.com.
