Though many New Yorkers have a fan or AC , there are some who can't afford to buy a cooling system for their homes. Because the heat index was above 95 degrees Fahrenheit for more than two days, the New York City's Office of Emergency Management opened cooling centers across the five boroughs this week.

The city's humidity flares are particularly dangerous to the elderly, young children, and people with health issues.

Anyone who needs help finding cooling centers can do so by searching on the Office of Emergency Management's website here.

Enter your address and the site will pull of a map of cooling centers nearby. In many neighborhoods, those are public libraries and senior citizen centers, which are wheelchair accessible.

New Yorkers can also call 311 or go on their website for more information about cooling centers in their neighborhood. For other ways to stay safe during the summer, including how to legally use fire hydrants, look at the Emergency Management's "Beat the Heat" guide.
