CRIME BLOTTER: Teen Arrested For Park Slope Cellphone Theft, Police Say

PARK SLOPE — A teen boy was arrested June 28 after snatching a man's cellphone near Eighth Avenue and Fourth Street, according to a police report.

The 56-year-old victim was walking down the street near his Fourth Street home about 7:45 p.m. He was holding the phone to his left ear when the 14-year-old boy swiped it and ran away, the report states. Officers tracked down the teen shortly afterward and the $200 phone was returned to its owner, according to the police report.

Other recent crimes in the 78th Precinct include the following, with details from police reports:

► A male thief told a store clerk, “Don’t worry about me,” then stole 50 bars of Dove soap worth $250 from the CVS on Ninth Street and Sixth Avenue on June 28 at 4:35 a.m.

► Three men used a stolen credit card to buy $117 worth of food and drinks from El Viejo Yayo restaurant on Fifth Avenue near Dean Street on June 30 about 8 p.m.

► Three men and two teen boys were arrested July 1 after stealing a 78-year-old woman’s 2012 BMW 328i from Bergen Street between Carlton and Sixth avenues. The woman had parked the car and left the keys under the driver’s seat.

►  A thief swiped a rose gold Apple iPhone from the Verizon store on Flatbush Avenue and Park Place on June 26 at 3:45 p.m.

► A Citi Bike was stolen from Fourth Avenue and Dean Street on June 7.

Overall, major crime in the 78th Precinct has dropped 15 percent this year compared to the same period in 2015, according to the most recent statistics from the NYPD. There were 370 major crimes reported between Jan. 1 and June 26, 2016, and 436 major crimes during that period in 2015.
