NEW YORK CITY — Many incumbents cruised to easy victories Tuesday as voters hit the polls for the primary election.

The most hotly contested race came in the battle for longtime Rep. Charles Rangel's congressional seat, with state Sen. Adriano Espaillat expected to escape with a narrow win over Assemblyman Keith Wright.
