QUEENS — Incumbent U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks won the Democratic primary in Southeast Queens' 5th Congressional District Tuesday.
Meeks, 63, who is seeking a 10th term in the House of Representatives, picked up nearly 81 percent of the vote.
His challenger, small business owner and Pakistani immigrant Ali Mirza, 57, received just less than 18 percent.
Meeks, first elected to Congress in 1998, had been favored to win the contest since he has wide name recognition in the district, which includes the entire Rockaway Peninsula, Jamaica, Hollis, Cambria Heights, Queens Village and St. Albans, as well as Elmont and Valley Stream in Nassau County.
He will face Republican Michael O’Reilly and Green Party candidate Frank Francois in the November general election.
