Police Looking for Man Who Offered Free Fare, Then Robbed Subway Rider

BROWNSVILLE — A robber lured a man into a subway stairwell with the offer of a free ride then took the man's cell phone at gunpoint, according to the NYPD.

The suspect approached the 19-year-old victim at the Van Siclen Avenue 3 train station and offered to pay his fair, police said.

The victim refused the offer, but the suspect jumped the turnstile, opened the emergency door and told the man to walk through, according to police.

The victim entered through the open emergency door and headed up the stairs that lead to the northbound subway platform, the NYPD said.

The suspect followed the man, pointed a handgun at him and proceeded to go through the victim’s pants’ pockets, from which he took a cellphone and fled, according to police.

Police released a photo of the suspect and said he is between 25 and 35 years old, about 5’10” and weighs about 175 lbs. When he was last seen he had on a white hooded sweater, a black baseball cap and dark colored cargo pants.
