Boozed-Up Driver Arrested After Deadly Hit-and-Run With Cyclist, Police Say

MANHATTAN — An off-duty MTA police officer caught an alcohol-impaired New Jersey driver who tried to make a getaway after fatally striking a cyclist in TriBeCa Saturday, the NYPD said.

Samuel Silva, 26, who had been drinking, was driving his Ford truck south on West Street when he turned right onto Chambers Street about 8 p.m. Saturday, struck the unidentified biker and kept driving, NYPD officials said.

The woman was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital, police said.

Silva, of Newark, kept driving until an off-duty MTA police officer caught him, an NYPD spokeswoman said. It wasn't clear when or where he was apprehended.

On Sunday, he was charged with manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to yield to a pedestrian and driving while his ability is impaired, police said.

He had not been arraigned as of Monday morning, according to online court records.
