Teens Targeted in Carroll Gardens Robbery Spree, Police Say

CARROLL GARDENS — Four teens were targeted in a series of robberies over an eight-day period in Carroll Gardens last month, police said Thursday.

One 15-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, was arrested June 2 and charged in connection with all four incidents, authorities said. The investigation is ongoing, and police said they’re looking for someone else in connection with the case.

In incidents on May 18, 23 and 26, four teens ages 13- through 15-years-old were mugged or almost mugged, police said.

A 15-year-old boy was walking on Third Street between Smith and Hoyt streets when he was accosted on May 18 at about 4 p.m., police said. The suspects threatened physical force and demanded his personal property, officials said.

Five days later, two boys, 15 and 13, were walking home about 3:45 p.m. near Fourth Place and Court Street when the suspects pushed and punched them, police said.

The suspects attempted to take a bag and a cellphone but did not succeed. One victim received minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital, police said.

Then on May 26, a 15-year-old boy was robbed of his cellphone near Clinton and Carroll streets, police said.

"These kids had a field day," Captain Elliot Colon said during the 76th Precinct's community council meeting Tuesday night.

A mother at the public meeting, who said her son was a victim of the muggings, praised police for their quick and thorough investigation of the crimes.

"You guys responded immediately," she said.

Overall, major crimes in the 76th Precinct — which covers Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Red Hook and parts of Boerum Hill — dropped 18.26 percent between January and May this year as compared to the same period a year ago, NYPD records show.

Though the precinct saw 11 robberies during a 28-day period ending May 29 as compared to seven last year, robbery incidents are down almost 16 percent for the year.
