The summer's first installment of the 11th Annual Governors Island Jazz Age Lawn Party will transport New Yorkers to the Roaring '20s this weekend, with music, dancing, vaudeville and cars of the decade taking the picnicking masses back in time.
Attendees tend to take their outfits very seriously, getting dolled up like real flappers and swells. If you're planning to go and you haven't a clue what to wear, don't worry — DNAinfo is here to provide the inspiration you'll need before your trip to the nearest vintage store.
Pick and choose some of the styles below as your assemble your own 1920s look:
Ladies, consider the dropped-waist dress...
Favoring a tomboyish look, women of the 1920s wore dresses with straight, rather than fitted silhouettes. We recommend a frock with a dropped waist or a tunic with a pleated skirt.
...with some elaborate beadwork
Flashy beads are sure to catch the eye as you Charleston on the dance floor.
The trouser
No need to wear a dress if it's not your style: trousers, which suited actress Colleen Moore's active lifestyle, first became fashionable for women in the 1920s,
The T-strap Mary Janes
As for footwear, you'll want something good for all that dancing. Try a pair of mid-height heeled, strappy shoes so you can be as properly soled as silent film star Clara Bow above.
The turban
Consider rocking a turban, à la Polish-born Hollywood starlet Pola Negri, who was commonly cast as the femme fatale and claimed Gypsy heritage.
The bob
Beneath the hat or turban, a wig will help you channel Louise Brooks, the star of such films as "Pandora's Box" and "Diary of a Lost Girl" who helped popularized the bob haircut.
Gents, we haven't forgotten you. Your options include the pale suit
It's sure to keep you cooler while you sip your cocktails and sit for your vintage portrait.
The double-breasted suit
Silent film star Buster Keaton, a master of physical comedy, didn't know how to smile in photographs, but he did know how to make a fashionable impression.
The tennis sweater
Summon your inner preppie with a V-necked sweater like those worn by tennis players Bill Tilden (far right) and Manuel Alonso (far left).
The straw boater hat
Keep your face out of the sun with a straw boater hat like comedian W.C. Fields', captured on the set of the film "It's the Old Army Game."
