MANHATTAN — Police on Tuesday arrested a man suspected of beating and robbing a woman in Gramercy last week, according to a police report.

Frankie Simmons, 25, of Washington Heights, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with robbery, sexually motivated assault, and strangulation in connection with the May 28 attack, in which a 30-year-old woman was beaten unconscious on East 18th Street between First and Second avenues, police said.

The attack occurred just before 2:30 a.m. as the woman was walking on East 18th Street, about half a block away from Stuyvesant Town, police said.

Coming up from behind, Simmons grabbed her in a chokehold, dragged her to the ground and punched her repeatedly in the face as she fought back, according to police.

The woman lost consciousness during the attack, and when she came to she found her iPhone missing and her underwear around her knees, according to a police report. Doctors treated her for her injuries at Beth Israel Hospital, police said.

Security cameras captured footage of Simmons inside a nearby Stuy Town building at some point shortly before or after the attack, but it was unclear if he had any ties to the complex, police said.

In the wake of the robbery and assault, Stuy Town owner Blackstone announced it would be ramping up security, introducing patrols that would monitor First Avenue with a particular focus on the entrances at East 16th and East 18th streets, a spokeswoman told DNAinfo last week.

Simmons' attorney information was not immediately available.
